Nord-Lock's wedge-locking technology secures bolted connections using tension rather than friction.
The system consists of a pair of retaining rings which are provided with beveled surfaces on one side and radial teeth on the other side.

Nord-Lock wedge locking products reliably secure the fastener in a connection subject to extreme vibrations or dynamic loads.

How it works: (see photo 2).

The secret is in the different angles.
Since the angle α of the bevels is greater than the pitch angle β, the lock washer pair expands more than the pitch of the thread.
